Recycled comes up trumps

The fashion industry has a pollution problem - the clothing and footwear industries together account for more than 8% of global climate impact, more than all international airline flights and maritime shipping trips combined!

The good news is that not only is the fashion industry wakening up to this but that consumers are receptive and keen to consume more ethical fashion.

According to our data, there are now hundreds of fashion items on sale from high street stores that actually state recycled in the title, putting the recycled status forefront as a selling tactic. These range from underwear to jeans to handbags and we have seen a sharp increase in consumers searching for recycled products on the Mallzee app.

One brand which is leading the pack on recycled fashion is French Connection who have launched a range of recycled leather handbags, offering 29 different styles and colourways.

These bags have scored really highly with consumers on the Mallzee app, with some of them being attributed the highest Mallzee Performance Score of 10 (grade 10 products fall within the top 10% of products within a category in terms of consumer popularity).  Of these high scoring recycled products, French Connection have achieved that holy grail of retail - there is one bag which scores highly in all colourways - The Tallin Recycled Leather Half Moon Crossbody bag comes in four colourways and scores a high grade in each.

Worldwide currently 87% of material used for clothing production is landfilled or incinerated after its final use, and less than 1 percent of material used to produce clothing is recycled to produce new clothing - but with high street names like French Connection introducing recycled ranges and getting such a positive consumer response these figures could soon be improving!
